Hello my dearest friends. We are in the second half of the A to Z challenge. It must have been really tiring and taxing for most of us. I can safely say that for us, Mocktail Mommies, at least. All of us have been racking our brains to get ideas from the farthest corners to write posts according to the alphabetical order. To be frank, we kinda found ourselves running out of topics. Along came the dreaded letter "Q"...it was my turn to write and I just could not come up with anything in particular, leave alone something interesting!
Just as I was about to give up,my eight year old daughter, who was watching the series "Planet Earth" asked me a question...."Mom, why is the earth round??" I was bowled over. I had no answer. Why was it round? Why not cuboid, rhomboid, diamond shaped?
But her question gave me my idea for this post. I am sure many among us have faced such a situation where we would not know the specific answers to some questions. So, my dear friends I thought of making today's post a little interactive.... I m putting down a list of questions to which I could not find answers. Please feel free to share your answers and thoughts with me in the comments. At the same time, I would love to hear a few questions you haven't been able to figure out. So let's go!!!!
Questions That Puzzled Me :
1. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
2. Why do people always "fall" in love? Not rise?
3. Why does around pizza always come in a square box?
4. Why the term "sleep like a baby" when babies actually wake up every 2 hours?
5. Why is yawning contagious?
6. How did language originate?
7. Why do nights "fall" and days "break"?
8. Why do magnets only attract certain metals?
9. Why do we dream?

Ha ha. Interesting questions and yes these last few alphabets are going to be tough to write about!! Cheers
ReplyDeleteYes Shalini, I actually went blank at a point. Did u find any answers??? Do share with us. Thanks for stopping by!!!

ReplyDeleteGreat questions...though I have no answers for you. A common one that I've heard here is: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is there, does it make a sound?
ReplyDeleteThat's another good one!!! Started a thought process in my mind.. thank you for visiting us!!
DeleteHaha! I loved this fun post of yours Prasanna. I too have been at a loss many times when my kids used to come up with questions for which I had no answer :)
ReplyDeleteA couple of them I remember are , what is the opposite of opposite?
What do sheep count when they can't sleep?
Thanks Radhika!! I am glad you enjoyed reading it.
DeleteNice post! I love questions!
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly I can answer a few of those questions... (Damn! my nerd side is triggered)
The egg came first Chicken were evolved out of other birds so eggs existed before the chicken.
Yawning is a very interesting thing! According to recent understanding, It cools down our brains and makes us alert. It is contagious out of empathy. The evolutionary basis of it lies in herd behaviors. A group of animals that yawn together stays alerted at in a synchronized way. It is found that yawning is most contagious with loved ones and least with people we care least about. Moreover, people with certain mental disorders do not exhibit yawning contagiously
I answered the language question briefly in my today's post (Shameless plugin)
So metals have free electrons (that conducts electricity) and their free electrons have a magnetic moment. The magnetic moment of these electrons generally cancels out by pairing. However, some of the electrons remain unpaired. So, having this magnetic moment act as tiny magnets so they attract to the magnets...
Also, the earth is round because of centripetal force. When planets and sun were in the formative stage the big cloud of gasses was collapsing under the force of gravity. Gravity is kind of a special force ... (I am skipping on why that cloud started spinning under gravity)
So as masses accumulated and fell into the nearby bigger mass planets and sun were formed... Each was still spinning on its own axis. Due to centripetal force, that clustered shape turned round.
I hope you don't mind my ramblings!
I have so many unanswered questions most of them philosophical...
Thanks for sharing!

Best Wishes!
Wow!!! Thanks for all the answers Kartika!! I m going to bed as a wiser woman today. This was exactly my objective as I wrote this post...to gain knowledge. Thank you so much for your wonderful & informative response!!
DeleteMisspelt your name Karnika....sorry for that๐
DeleteHi Prasanna, The questions you asked are somethings people are still looking answers for now lets try a little humor here
ReplyDelete1. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Egg came first! Well Dinosaurs laid eggs too right
2. Why do people always "fall" in love? Not rise? Love hurts many, so they fall, they get hurt..Taada Imma genius
3. Why does around pizza always come in a square box? To decieve innocent people, Fat disguised as taste
4. Why the term "sleep like a baby" when babies actually wake up every 2 hours? Coz babies look cute when they sleep
5. Why is yawning contagious? Lack of oxygen causes yawn, so many people in the same place will have lack of oxygen and hence it looks contagious
6. How did language originate? People were bored and wanted to communicate and drawing things everytime was tiring and time consuming
7. Why do nights "fall" and days "break"? Nights fall coz we fall flat and sleep, days break coz we break-out from that sleep (My soopar logic)
8. Why do magnets only attract certain metals? (Magnets are choosy)
9. Why do we dream? (Coz sometimes they look better that reality)
A Peice Of My Life
Hey Deepa, that was amazing fun!!! You have a super sense of humour. Thank you so much for infusing some life into this boring topic๐
DeleteI must make a note of some these for the next quiz night at the Fish Inn!
ReplyDeleteIt's Quiz Night in Amble Bay!
Yup Keith. Let us know how it goes... thanks for visiting us!!
DeleteHa, when I first brainstormed the letter Q I thought of "Questions", too!
ReplyDeleteI will try my very best answering yours:
1. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? I believe it was the egg. All the things in nature evolved from cells, and an egg feels like a concentration of cells. ๐ฃ
2. Why do people always "fall" in love? Not rise? Because they have no control over it, it's beyond them. Like gravity.
3. Why does around pizza always come in a square box? Square boxes are easier to make and store, I guess. Question is: why don't they fill the boxes with square pizza? We actually have to pay for the empty space?
4. Why the term "sleep like a baby" when babies actually wake up every 2 hours? Because we do the same? Without noticing of course. Babies look so peaceful when they're asleep, and that's how we feel after a good night's rest. Not that I knew anything about that!!!
5. Why is yawning contagious? It's a game. Everybody waits for the other person to yawn FIRST, so they can finally follow and claim it was contagious. Because nobody got a good night's sleep, see previous question. ๐ด
6. How did language originate? People always felt the need to "name" stuff. They came up with sounds because they ran out of matches to create smoke signals ;-)))) Getting silly here, forgive me. ๐
7. Why do nights "fall" and days "break"? That's only the case in English, in my language nights and days just START. Actually that's not true, if we want to be fancy, we use "break" as well, for both, though.
8. Why do magnets only attract certain metals? The other metals used to be attracted by magnets, too, but over time they didn't like it anymore and the Brexited. ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ช๐บ
9. Why do we dream? So we have something to try and remember all day!
Why is there no number 10? Outside the A-Z challenge month, I run this weekly challenge "Top Ten Thursday", so if you're into lists, please join us, here's the sign-up for May 4: https://www.facebook.com/events/251556821919346/

DeleteDon't you think "Why do nights "fall" and days "break" would make a fab title for a book?
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading your questions today. I find questions more intriguing than answers...there are more possibilities with questions. Answers can be so abrupt!
Q is for questions to a Blogger
Thank you for visiting us Arti. We are glad you enjoyed reading the questions!!
DeleteAh yes, those are some great questions to ask! For my post today I thought of questions I would like to ask characters in the book I'm currently working on. It was actually pretty fun. :)
ReplyDeleteVisiting from the A to Z Challenge. You can see my "Q" post here: https://lydiahowe.com/2017/04/20/q-is-for-questions-atozchallenge-also-time-for-yall-to-ask-questions/
Thank you for visiting us Aidyl. Questions are indeed thought provoking.
DeleteWhy does the toast always fall buttered side down?
ReplyDeleteWhy do ants fly before they die but aunts don't?
Why does a watched pot never boil, but the milk over boils whenever you take your eyes off even for a nanosecond?
Why do children eat broccoli and fruits when they are given by strangers yet refuse them at home?
Best wishes,
Nilanjana.
Madly-in-Verse
Super additions to the list Nilanjana. Thank you for visiting us. As for children eating food given by strangers when they refuse to eat the same at home....it is a mystery!!!
DeleteFun questions. I think there are some real answers to the last one - why we dream, but as for some of the others, who knows? I've always wondered why is pi = 3.141.... ? Maui Jungalow
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting us Courtney. Always wondered how Pi came to exist.
DeleteFun post. I'll see your questions and raise mine:
ReplyDelete1) Did you know "realists gushing" anagrams into "laughing sisters"?
2) If athletes get athlete's foot, do astronauts get mistletoe?
3) Does anyone really know what time it is?
Thank you for the super additions to the list... I liked the one about the astronauts getting mistletoe ๐๐
DeleteAw man, someone beat me to the round planets and the magnet questions.
ReplyDeleteBut I can add something to the Why is the Earth Round question: Matter accretes (comes together) in the universe due to gravity. The more matter you have, the stronger the gravity. Some matter looks lumpy (like, say, an asteroid) because gravity cannot fully overcome the mechanical structure of the matter. (Hey, silicates are rigid, donchaknow?)
Now, how much mass that is depends on what the matter is. Icy bodies, like you'd find out near Pluto, would need less mass than, say, rocky bodies, found closer to the Sun. But on average, you're looking at about 6 x 10^20 kg, or about 132,000,000,000,000,000,000 pounds of matter. That would be about 400-600 km in diameter, give or take.

Thank you Heidi....Feels great to have gained a lot of knowledge from the comments. I am glad everyone interacted so well at all levels!! Thank you for stopping by.
DeletePrasanna, I would like to know why Nights fall and Days break too! I don't envy you being at the receiving end of those questions! :))
