SRILANKA Diaries!!!

As summer vacations were close by and as usual we keep thinking where do we need to plan our vacations, we decided let’s go to SRILANKA!!! Sri Lanka, one of most beautiful islands in the world and is believed to be the kingdom of Ravana.  Full of romantic landscapes, stirring mountains, lush green tea gardens and golden beaches, the island nation of Srilanka is nothing short of magnificent. The country has no shortage of beautiful awe inspiring spots, natural, historic and cultural, each more picture perfect than the next. Although it is small, there is so much history, nature and beauty to see in this country. Srilanka is the fourth largest tea exporter and it most common known for its Ceylon Tea which is considered the cleanest tea in the world by ISO.  Cinnamon is actually from Srilanka and loved around the world and which is used for many things.  Overall 92% of people living in the country are literate which means the highest literacy rate in the whole of South Asia.

To begin with we visited  Pinnawala Elephant Orphange, which is located at Pinnawala Village, 13kms northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Srilanka.  It has the largest herd of elephants.  The Orphanage is open to all public daily.  Public can view how they take care of the elephants such as bottle feeding of elephants and their bathing in the Ma Oya River.  My daughter enjoyed this the most as it was a first hand experience for her.

Then we proceeded to Kandy, which is a major city in Srilanka.  The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which mainly crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is the home of The Temple of Tooth Relic one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world.

Then we proceeded to Yala.  Yala National park, Srilanka’s most famous wild life park which covers 979 square kms and is located about 300kms from Colombo. The best time to visit Yala is between February and July when the water levels of the park are quite low, bringing animals into the open.We were lucky to spot leopard, elephant, peacock, little crocs while venturing in to the forest which also is home for other species such as bears ,sambars, dears etc.

We then proceeded to Mirissa, a small town on the south coast of Srilanka. It is approximately 150kms south of Colombo.  Mirissa’s beach and night life makes it a popular tourist destination.  It is a fishing port and one of the islands main whale and dolphin watching locations.

From there we went to Bentota, a coastal town in Srilanka, located in the Galle District.  It is a tourist attraction with world class hotels. It is approx 65kms south of Colombo and 56kms north of Galle. Bentota is situated on the southern bank of the Bentota River mouth. It also has a turtle Hatchery, located on the Induruwa beach.

Then we moved to Colombo for a day journey, on our way back to the airport.  Colombo being the capital and largest city in Srilanka and most busiest place with a mixture of modern life. The famous landmark are Colombo Racecourse, University of Colombo, Premdasa Stadium as well as National Museum.

Do visit SRILANKA and share with me your views also!!!!
